Juror Appreciation Week

Juror Appreciation Week is May 12-May 16, 2008. This week recognizes the over 60,000 Sacramento County residents who participate in the jury process each year in Sacramento County's courts. Over 300,000 members of our community are contacted each year for potential jury service. Read more in the news release. You will need the free Adobe® Reader® to download the news release.

Tip of the Week

Everyone in your vehicle who is 16 years and older, or anyone weighing more than 60 pounds must be wearing a seatbelt when you are driving. If you or anyone in your vehicle is caught not wearing a seatbelt, you can be ticketed - even if you are wearing your seatbelt and your passenger is not wearing a seatbelt. All children 6 years old and younger who weigh less than 60 pounds must be restrained in a federally-approved car seat at all times in a moving vehicle. Visit the California Department of Motor Vehicles Web site at www.dmv.ca.gov for additional information.

I-5 Construction Project

Situated in the heart of downtown Sacramento, the Superior Court will be impacted by the I-5 closures between May 30 and July 15, 2008. If you have business with the Superior Court as a juror, you are scheduled for a hearing, or you have other appointments or business with the court, consider a route, a time of departure or a mode of transportation other than the norm that enables you to arrive on time or even a few minutes early. We have compiled resources and information which we hope will help you make informed decisions on travel alternatives.

New Pilot Mediation Program - Now Available!

The Sacramento Superior Court is pleased to announce the implementation of its voluntary Mediation Pilot Program as another option to the Court's Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Programs focusing on the timely resolution of civil cases. The Court encourages parties to utilize ADR and invites you to learn more about this and other ADR programs by selecting the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Programs' link on the Civil web page.

Mediation Panelist Applications Now Being Accepted

In 2007, the Sacramento Superior Court will be offering a new court-administered mediation program in civil cases as another form of its Alternative Dispute Resolution Program. This voluntary program will provide mediation at no cost to the litigants as described below.  With this additional choice, Sacramento Superior Court ADR options will now include (1) mandatory judicial arbitration; (2) voluntary court or private mediation; and (3) mandatory settlement conferences.

Parties choosing to participate in the court mediation program can either choose a private mediator or can choose a mediator from a Court-approved list of neutrals. Neutrals on the Court-approved list must apply to the Court and be approved by the Court’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee.  The court, not the parties, will compensate the neutrals at a rate of $200 for the first 3 hours of actual mediation time.  If the parties desire to continue with the mediation after the initial 3 hours, the parties will then bear the additional cost of the mediation at rates agreed upon with the neutral.

The court anticipates referring cases to the mediation program sometime in the first quarter of 2007 and it will be operated as a one year pilot.

Attorneys interested in applying to serve as court appointed mediators are encouraged to apply immediately.  You can download the Mediation Panelist Application. Send the completed application to: Superior Court of Sacramento County, 720 9th Street, Room 101, Sacramento, CA  95814, Attn: ADR Administrator.

You will need the free Adobe® Reader® to download the application.
