Juvenile
Delinquency
A delinquent child
is anyone under the age of 18 who violates the law. A
petition must be filed and the juvenile court must find the
charges to be true or dismiss them. If the charges are found
to be true, either through admission by the minor or by a trial of
facts, the minor may be removed from the home. For lesser
crimes, the minor may remain with a parent (s) under certain
conditions of probation, detained in juvenile hall for a limited
term or placed in any of a variety of programs. Some
younger, less criminally sophisticated juveniles who require a
residential-type intervention are sent to The
Warren E. Thornton Youth Center. An extension of this
facility, is the Sandra
L. Larson Youth Center where up to 77 minors may be
housed. For more
serious crimes, the delinquent may be ordered committed to the Sacramento
County Boys Ranch of the
California
Youth Authority (CYA). For some crimes, a minor who
meets the criteria outlined in the Welfare
and Institutions Code may be tried and sentenced as an adult.
